The emergence of the Impressionist movement in painting during the second half of the nineteenth century coincided with the development of photography and a new scientific appreciation of the properties of light and colour.  The Techniques of the Impressionists is an authoritative but clear, analysing thirty key paintings in detail, spanning the period of from 1860 to the end of the century. The artists range from Courbet to Cézanne, from Pissaro to Toulouse -Lautrec, and represent almost every aspect of the movement.
